What to Keep in Mind When Going on a Motorcycle Road Trip397644fc8af9028f02dab52915c261de

Going on a motorcycle trip is a great way to get away from the pressures of everyday life. Some people choose to go on a motorcycle trip by themselves because they enjoy solitude. Others prefer to go with just one or two others who are very special to them. Still, others choose to join a motorcycle group and travel with a larger group. Regardless, keeping some tips in mind can make the trip even better.

Stay Alert

You will want to make sure to stay alert when riding your motorcycle. Many motorists find motorcycles hard to see, so you need to watch out for yourself and other drivers. One way to stay safe is to look out for and be aware of common road hazards as well as exercise caution in unfamiliar areas. Just like if you are traveling in a car, take frequent breaks so that you do not try to ride when you are drowsy. You should also be sure to stay alert when you are off your bike so that you do not get hit when walking or stopping to see attractions. Remember that while minor fender benders may occur when two cars run together, it can be deadly if a motorcycle is involved. Therefore, you need to predict what drivers may attempt to do and leave them plenty of room to do it.

Stay Hydrated

Most motorcycles do not have adequate air conditioners, so riding in the sun can be very warm. You may not be thinking about this, but the heat can cause you problems, so make sure you stay hydrated. The wind can further dehydrate you. Protective clothing often causes your body to get even warmer. Alcohol and sodas do not hydrate your body well. Instead, drink water, flavored water, or sports drinks. Try drinking at least eight ounces of water when you first get up. It takes almost 30 minutes for the water to start helping your muscles, so you do not want to wait until you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated. Make sure to continue to drink more water throughout the day. Dehydration can lead to unclear thinking, so if you think you are dehydrated, take a break until your body is hydrated again.

Pick Your Route

You should pick your motorcycle route based on your riding experience as some roads are much harder to navigate than others. If you are an experienced rider, then you might want to consider riding the Tail of the Dragon through the Great Smoky National Park. This 11-mile stretch is so notorious that riders have created a tree of shame where they attach motorcycle parts from wrecked bikes. This is a beautiful ride to attempt in the fall. Another road trip that experienced riders may want to consider is found along Texas Farm to Market Roads 335, 336, and 337. One 15-mile stretch of this highway has 65 curves and many beautiful panoramic views located along it.

Keeping alert, hydrated, and knowing where you are going are essential elements of a successful motorcycle road trip.
